Brno Prison – A Space of Memory, Traces of Presence
The Brno Prison on Cejl Street is a place that carries within it layers of the past, human destinies, and silence. A space that originally served as a penitentiary gradually became, over the decades, a witness to suffering, waiting, powerlessness, and unspoken hope. The photographic series created within these walls is not a document of the past, but an attempt to establish a quiet dialogue with what remains.
For us, as photographers, working in the prison was not only a challenge, but also a personal journey – a way of grasping and conveying, through image, the atmosphere of a place that was long closed, yet still speaks with striking intensity. We sought to capture the imprints of absent bodies, the tension between abandonment and endurance, between light and shadow.
For us, the prison became a space in which we could reflect on the boundaries of freedom, on traces left behind, and on the ways in which human stories are inscribed into walls. Our intention was not to reconstruct history, but to sensitively explore a place that continues to resonate even in silence.
At the same time, we perceive the Brno Prison as a space in motion – not only a site that preserves the past, but one that is currently transforming and moving toward a new role. Its future remains open, and it is precisely this tension between what was, what is, and what is yet to come that forms the strong emotional dimension of the entire series. The prison is therefore not only a memento, but also a living organism that invites new ways of seeing and new readings.
